Catherine
Briggs is a librarian. The small town public library she manages is
represented briefly in the first three pages as a dreary place: "The
library was about as varied and exciting as a treadmill." Upon
arriving for work she needs only change the date on her stamp and she
is ready for the "thin trickle of women, mostly elderly, coming
to select 'a nice romance with a happy ending.'"
