is a voluptuous and energetic librarian at a branch of the Berkeley
Public Library. She flirts a bit with a lesbian woman who is in the
library for tutoring in the Literacy Program Office, but she is so
helpful she doesn’t even realize her patron cannot read. “Pam in
the library was like milk and sugar in bitter tea” (p. 44).
